African Batik Project Teaching Pack - Key Stage 1  ISBN: 0-9552832-0-5  2nd edition

This is our most popular Project Teaching Pack and it has been totally rewritten and enlarged for the second edition.

This process of Batik is an alternative to the traditional method of using wax, which is often avoided by teachers for safety reasons.  This African Batik method has been developed by us over the years and does not use any expensive equipment and typically costs approximately £2 per child for materials.  It can be safely used for Key Stage 1 and older children, and produces fantastic results with endless possibilities - see some examples in the photo gallery.  A Project Teaching Pack covering Wax-resist Batik is also available for use with older children at Key Stage 2 and beyond.

This 78 page Project Teaching Pack has been totally rewritten for the second edition and has detailed instructions for 4 different batik projects including individual and collaborative pieces.  It takes you through the simple stages of the method with detailed instructions and full colour photographs.  The resource pack contains photographs of the different stages of the process, together with examples of children's artwork and batiks from around the world produced using this process. There are also numerous design ideas, suggestions for themes and further work ideas. With the exception of consumable materials and equipment the pack includes everything necessary to make beautiful batiks, and provides guidance for further work.

This 78 page A4 pack has ideas for 4 different projects and contains 58 full colour photographs, 20 design motifs and numerous illustrations.  It includes the following:

    History of batik
Batik books and other reference sources
    Materials, equipment and suppliers
Time planning for this topic in the school curriculum
Art vocabulary to use in this project
    Introduction to the batik process
    Design work
    Batik stages
    Using dye
    Project 1: Individual batik
    Project 2: Aboriginal design
Project 3: Collaborative piece on African theme
    Project 4: Patterns in nature
Links to QCA units and further ideas

The pages of the Project Teaching Pack are in individual plastic sleeves to protect them against spills and damage in the classroom. The pack is in a sturdy loose-leaf folder and the A4 pages can be used for display.

In response to requests from teachers we have produced a CD which includes all of the images in this pack. This can be used with an interactive white board or other computer-based display system so large groups of children can view process photographs and reference pictures.  Order with your packs.
